The New York Yankees will travel to Angel Stadium on Sunday evening for the final game of their weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels. On Top of the Line Sources have been Red Hot on Baseball Picks this week & have a strong MLB Pick for this one. Click Here!

Sabathia pitching well at age 37

The Yankees will hand the ball off to left-handed veteran C.C. Sabathia on Sunday Night Baseball. Sabathia has picked up right where he left off after a resurgent 2017 campaign. The left-handed ace comes in with a 1-0 record and a 1.86 ERA in four starts this season. He has allowed just eight runs (four earned) in 19 ⅓ innings of work, while striking out 12 batters and walking just four. Sabathia is fresh off of tossing six innings of two-hit ball in his last start against the Minnesota Twins. He allowed just one unearned run and struck out four batters to earn his first victory of the season. It was the second straight start that Sabathia allowed no earned runs.

The Yankees left-hander has been effective pitching to contact this season. Opposing hitters are batting just .203 off of Sabathia and he owns a stellar 0.98 WHIP for someone who isn’t exactly racking up strikeouts at a high rate.

Last season, the 37-year-old made one start against the Angels, pitching four innings of three-hit ball, while allowing just one unearned run on the night. Since 2015, Sabathia is 101 with a 3.12 ERA in three starts against the Halos.

Skaggs pitching well for Halos

The Angels will counter by sending promising right-hander Tyler Skaggs to the hill on Sunday night. He is fresh off of seven shutout innings of four-hit ball on the road against the Astros and has allowed two runs or less in four of his five starts this year. Skaggs comes in with a 3-1 record to go along with a 2.96 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP so far this year. He’s struck out 24 batters and walked just eight in 27 ⅓ innings of work.

Sunday will mark Skaggs’ first career start against the Yankees.

According to Baseball Savant, the current Angels’ roster is batting .245 in 98 at-bats against Sabathia with five doubles and four home runs.

Trends

New York Yankees

  • Yankees are 4-1 in their last 5 vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Yankees are 36-17 in their last 53 games on grass.

Los Angeles

  • Angels are 1-6 in their last 7 home games.
  • Angels are 0-4 in their last 4 vs. American League East.

It’s really hard to trust Skaggs to keep the ball in the park against a potent Yankees lineup. His home run per fly ball rate is sitting at just 4.0 percent this season and will probably end up closer to his career rate of 11.5 percent. This is a good spot to look for some regression in his numbers. Skaggs owns a 2.96 ERA but a 3.83 xFIP in five starts this year. Meanwhile, Sabathia has been excellent on the mound for the Yankees  through four starts this year, so look for the Yankees to come out on top in primetime on Sunday night.
