Sharps Quickly Fade Teams In Early Week 3 Betting

Among the bigger early movers after the first 7 hours of trading on the NCAAF Week 3 betting board at BetOnline on Sunday afternoon were Boston College, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Maryland, Michigan, New Mexico State and Nick Boa (3.0 sacks) and Ohio State, all of whom saw at least 2 points of movement for their games this coming week with the first game on the betting board — Thursday night’s Boston College-Wake Forest clash from BB&T Field in Winston-Salem, NC (ESPN, 7:30 p.m. ET) — seeing the biggest jump at publishing time with sharps pounding the Eagles from opening 1- to as high as 5½-point favorites for their ACC Atlantic Division game (WAKE 3-1 ATS L4 vs BC).

Some other big teams the early betting birds were throwing their money on: Ole Miss over #1 Alabama with the Crimson Tide going from opening -22½ chalks down 3 points to -19½ favorites over the Rebels for their SEC showdown at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, MS on Saturday night (ESPN, 7 p.m. ET); #4 Ohio State, who went up 3 points from -10½ -115 to -13½ for its game against #15 TCU at Jerry World in Arlington, TX on Saturday night (ABC, 8:07 p.m. ET); and, New Mexico State (0-3 ATS, 0-6 ATS all 6 halves in 2018), who went from 8-point home dogs down to as low as 6 (Bookmaker) for their Land of Enchantment, Rio Grande Rivalry (NM 70-33-5) Saturday (NMS 4-0 ATS L4 series).

A Public-Made Chalk, Strange-Looking Lines and Two Wrong-Side Favorites?

The Baylor-Duke game on Saturday opened up as a “pick ’em” at BetOnline and the wiseguys quickly bet the host Bears into a position of being 2-point favorites, with the game being played at McLane Stadium (Artificial Hellas-Matrix) in Waco and the upstart Blue Devils (2-0 SU/ATS) coming off a tough win at Northwestern in Week 3 probably being part of their thinking.

Like with Miami-Ohio favored over Cincinnati at offshore open in Week 2 (MIA -1 -108), there are a couple of Week 3 point spreads where it sure seems like the other side could be favored, or at least in a near-even situation, with Cole McDonald (1,165 Passing yards, #1 FBS), John Ursua (423 receiving yards, #1 in FBS) and new-look Hawai’i — who have scored on all 3 first possessions (and all TDS) in 2018 after going scoreless every single time in its first possession in 2017 — opening as modest 5-point underdogs with the Black Knights being bet up to as high as 7 with early money backing Independent Army (1-1 SU/ATS) at Michie Stadium (FieldTurf) in West Point, NY.

Backers of Army here know that the Golden Rainbows will have to deal with a nasty 6-hour time difference, meaning a 6 a.m. kickoff on Saturday morning in their poor pineapple-infused body clocks — and having to travel some 4,949 miles from the Aloha State to the Empire State, one of the longest possible trips in FBS and FCS. Hawai’i (3-0 ATS L3 vs ARMY) can score and Army may have some trouble doing so with the Rainbow Warriors (3-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) vastly improved on both sides of the pigskin.

And another potential wrong-side favorite and strange-looking number in my mind is Oregon State being 5½-point underdogs at Nevada in a Pac 12-MWC matchup from Mackay Stadium (FieldTurf) in Reno. While the Wolf Pack (1-1 SU/ATS) were playing FCS Portland State and Vanderbilt, (VANDY 41 NEV 10; VANDY -10) the Beavers (1-1 SU/ATS, 1-11 SU in 2017) were cutting their teeth on #5 Ohio State at The Horseshoe and Big Sky members Southern Utah (OSU 48-25, OSU -13). With QB Conor Blount (27/41, 395, 3 TDs), freshman RB Jermar Jefferson (30/285/4/9.5 ypc) and WR Trevon Bradford (9/151/3 TDs/16.87 ypc), Oregon State can knock off Nevada this weekend.
