t’s the middle game of an early week series on the diamond in the City of Brotherly Love between a pair of NL East rivals. The Miami Marlins are on the road as they play the middle game of a three-game set with the Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday night. Miami split a four-game set at home with Washington over the weekend, falling 5-1 in the finale Sunday afternoon. Philadelphia was drubbed 12-4 on the road by the Reds Monday in the makeup of a previously postponed contest. The Phillies edged the Marlins 4-3 on Tuesday.

Miami ended up splitting their four-game set with Washington as they were knocked off in the finale Sunday afternoon. The Marlins entered Tuesday last in the NL East, 8.5 games behind the Mets for the top spot. They were 12.5 games behind the Padres for the second wild-card spot in the National League. On Sunday, Miami got two of their six hits from Jon Berti while Jesus Aguilar knocked in the team’s lone run with an RBI double in the first inning. The lack of offense hampered Sandy Alcantara (4-7), who took the loss on the mound. He threw 5.1 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

With Cody Poteet back on the IL, it’s expected that Jordan Holloway will get the ball for his ninth appearance and third start of the season for the Marlins. He comes in 1-2 with a 2.55 ERA, a 1.189 WHIP, 10 walks and 14 strikeouts over 17.2 innings of work. Holloway didn’t factor in the decision in his last appearance, which came in relief at home against the Mets on May 21. He threw one scoreless inning, allowing no hits or walks while striking out one in a game the Marlins dropped 6-5 in 12 innings. Holloway is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA, a 1.46 WHIP, eight walks and seven strikeouts over 11.2 innings in five outings on the year. This marks his second career appearance and first start against the Phillies. In his major league debut, he threw one-third of an inning, allowing no runs on two hits with one walk and no strikeouts in an 11-6 Marlins win. Holloway made that appearance at Citizens Bank Park, giving him a passing familiarity with the venue.

Philadelphia Phillies Look to Make Move in NL East

Philadelphia was clubbed by the Reds on the road in the makeup of a previously postponed contest Monday after splitting a four-game set with the Mets over the weekend. The Phillies entered Tuesday fourth in the NL East, five games behind the Mets for the top spot in the division and nine games back of the Padres for the second wild-card spot in the NL. Philadelphia got two hits each from Odubel Herrera (run) and Alec Bohm (run, two RBI) in the loss while Ronald Torreyes drove in a pair of runs. Spencer Howard threw 2.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout before departing. Neftali Feliz (0-1) took the loss in his first big league appearance since August 13, 2017, as he allowed three runs on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
