Appalachian St Backup RB Raykwonn Anderson (223 YR, 2 TD 2019) has decided to opt out, likely because he didn’t crack the 3-deep for the first game. He’ll return with 3 years of eligibility remaining. Likewise RS frosh QB David Baldwin-Griffen opted outas he fell off the depth chart when jr. Jackson Gibbs climbed to No. 3 behind seniors Zac Thomas and Jacob Huesman.
Arkansas St RB Marcel Murray was held out of the opening upset win at Kansas State.
BYU Soph RB Sione Finau, the Cougars’ leading rusher from a year ago despite suffering an ACL injury late in the season, is still trying to get ready to play and was hoping to get a chance against Army after sitting out the Navy opener Sept. 7. But the game at West Point has been postponed. His return would be a help after BYU lost backup RB Jackson McChesney with a foot injury suffered in the Navy game that requires surgery. McChesney carried 11 times for 56 yds. & a score vs. the Mids. The Cougs had plenty of RB power vs. the Navy, however, as Lopini Katoa and Tyler Allgeier combined for 212 YR & 4 TDs.
Clemson Starting CB Derion Kendrick and backup CB Mario Goodrich both missed the Wake Forest game. Also unavailable was starting DE Justin Foster.
Duke One of Duke’s top defenders, DE Chris Rumph, was helped off the field vs. ND. Rumph is one of the top pass rushers in the college game this season. This is potentially the 2nd major injury for the Blue Devils, who lost C Jack Wohlabaugh with a preseason ACL tear. Sr. DT Derrick Tangelo also limped off against Notre Dame, but it didn’t immediately appear to be serious.
Florida Atlantic Sr. WR John Mitchell, FAU’s top returning receiver with 38 catches, 488 yds. and 5 TDs LY, has decided to opt out for 2020 and return in 2021 for his final season of eligibility. The Owls had previously had a backup RB (soph Cordel Littlejohn) & CB (RS frosh La’Darius Henry) decide to sit out 2020.
Florida State Starting DE Joshua Kaindoh suffered what appeared to be a knee injury on an illegal chop block and was forced out of the game against Georgia Tech.
Georgia Southern Team lists 33 (count ‘em!) players on the injury report. Reportedly 16 players were inactive for the warmup vs. the Campbell Camels, and all reasons are undisclosed so the suspicion is it’s a COVID outbreak/contact tracing issue.
Georgia Tech Florida transfer and projected starting DE Antonneous Clayton was held out of the team’s opener against Florida State without explanation. It was the same case for top CB Tre Swilling, who missed the Seminoles as well.
Iowa State Charlie Kolar TE out with a lower body injury vs ULL. Kolar was first team all Big 12 LY after making 51 catches with 7 TDs.
Kansas State Lost projected starting RB Joe Ervin and deep backup RB Thomas Grayson (both RS frosh) when each decided to opt out of playing this season. Sr. Harry Trotter (263 YR, 4 TDs, 4.0 ypc LY) will likely be the lead back. Starting soph S Wayne Jones was stretchered off after taking a blow to the head/neck area. C Noah Johnson was removed with an elbow injury against Arkansas St. and is iffy for Oklahoma on September 26.
Liberty Starting WRs soph Noah Frith (foot) and sr. D.J. Stubbs (ankle) are expected to be ready for the opener at WKU Sept. 19. Backup S Isaac Steele and deep reserve DE Elisha Mitchell have both opted out of ‘20. The Flames listed a number of other injury problems that affect only deep depth.
Notre Dame WR Ben Skowronek, a star-crossed, injury plagued transfer from Northwestern started but then injured his leg and was removed against Duke. Check status for South Florida.
Pittsburgh U The Panthers had unexplained absences by starting WR Taysir Mack, TE Lucas Krull and DE Rashad Weaver (COVID-related) in 55-0 win vs. Austin Peay.
Syracuse RBs Abdul Adams and Jarveon Howard, who combined for 673 YR & 6 TDs LY and were listed 1-2 on Dino Babers’ two-deep in the spring, were both left off the first depth chart in preparation for North Carolina Sept. 12 and have opted out of playing this season. Orange OL took a hit when the NCAA denied the immediate eligibility of Florida transfer Chris Bleich, pending his appeal he will remain on the sidelines for this season.
Temple Jr. S DaeSean Winston, who was the favorite to start for the Owls, has opted out of playing this season. He likely had COVID-19 concerns.
Tex San Antonio Top returning WR Zakhari Franklin was held out of the team’s 51-48 OT win against Texas State for undisclosed reasons.
Texas Jr. S B.J. Foster, who started 8 games LY and was slated to be a regular pre-COVID, curiously quit the team in the middle of the romp over UTEP (yeah, it’s weird). He was listed as the backup in the media 2-deep before the game and was reportedly upset about his playing time. It’s uncertain if he’ll be allowed to return should he have a change of heart. Soph WR Jake Smith (25 recs., 6 TDs as a true frosh LY) didn’t play against UTEP due to a hamstring injury. The Longhorns lost backup RS frosh WR Jordan Whittingham with a knee injury vs. UTEP as well, Whittingham made his first 2 catches for the Longhorns before the injury.
Texas A&M Sr. WR Jhamon Ausbon has opted out of playing in 2020 in order to get ready for the NFL draft. Ausbon is a major loss, as he led the team in receptions and yardage LY and was 3rd-team all-SEC LY after making 13 starts for the Aggies.
Texas Tech The Red Raiders were without a handful of reserve offensive players against Houston Baptist, but it certainly is no excuse for the Red Raiders’ struggling against the Huskies. Baptist QB Bailey Zappe burned the Red Raiders for 567 yds. and 4 TDs, which is an indictment of d.c. Keith Patterson, who has 8 returning starters including most of his back 7.
UL Monroe HC Matt Viator has lost two projected starters when sr. WR Brandius Batiste and jr. DE Edward Haralson both opted out just before the opener at Army.
UTEP Starting sr. RB Quardraiz Wadley, who missed all of LY with an injury but had started against Stephen F Austin, was held out at Texas and is reportedly out for the season with a toe injury. Wadley had gained a combined 1072 yds. in 2017-18.
West Virginia Eleven Mountaineers were suspended against Eastern Kentucky for violating team rules
