Week 5 College Football Special Ticker:

Starting Arkansas QB KJ Jefferson was KO’d against Texas A+M last week with a knee issue. He was spelled by Malik Hornsby but should be ready to go in this week’s showdown with Georgia.

Team Ticker
Arizona U QB Will Plummer has been suffering from being “banged up” according to HC Jedd Fisch. Plummer had been listed as a co-starter with Washington St. transfer Gunnar Cruz, but took the majority of the snaps in the humiliating loss against Northern Arizona, sharing time with Jordan McCloud who completed 6 of 7 for 191 with a TD and 2 interceptions. This past weekend at Oregon, McCloud went the distance for the Wildcats, completing 21 of 35 passes for 233 yards and a TD, but threw 5 interceptions in the 41-19 Duck romp.
Arkansas Starting QB KJ Jefferson was KO’d against Texas A+M last week with a knee issue. He was spelled by Malik Hornsby but should be ready to go in this week’s showdown with Georgia.
BYU Soph QB Jaren Hall was held out against USF victory with rib problems and was replaced by fellow soph Baylor Romney, who directed the 35-27 victory over USF by completing 20 of 25 passes for 305 yds., 3 TDs and no interceptions. Hall is expected to be available Friday at Utah State.
California Productive RB DeCarlos Brooks missed Washington with a lower body injury. Brooks had 8 carries for 86 yards. TE Jake Tonges was helped off in OT with a possible leg re-injury vs. the Huskies (was limping and played wearing a heavy brace on one knee). Soph NG Stanley McKenzie also limped off in OT and didn’t return. Check status. The Bears were also without LB Kuony Deng and WR Nikko Remigio had to leave the game after absorbing a blow in the 4th Q.
Clemson Frosh RB Will Shipley, the team’s leading rusher with 211 YR (4.8 ypc) will miss some time after suffering a knee injury in the loss to NC State, but the problem won’t end his season and he’s expected back in a few weeks. Clemson also lost 6th-year sr. defensive leader LB James Skalski with a shoulder injury and starting soph DT Bryan Bresee (13 Ts and a sack) with a torn ACL against the Wolfpack as well.
Georgia Southern Sr. RB JD King, the team’s top returning rusher, got his first carries of the season against Louisiana, recording 6 totes for 23 yards in the 28-20 loss to Louisiana.
Illinois RB Chase Brown and CB Devon Witherspoon missed the Purdue loss, as did star LB Jake Hansen, who was scratched after warmups (all undisclosed injuries).
Indiana WR DJ Matthews, who caught 5 passes for 120 yds. against Cincy 2 weeks ago, hurt his leg against WKU and was on crutches afterward. He caught 2 passes for 15 yards before being injured against the Hilltoppers.
Kansas State QB Will Howard was limited by a lower body injury, tried to play through it but had to be replaced by Jaren Lewis in the 2nd half of the loss to Oklahoma State after completing just 4 of 12 passes for 50 yards. Lewis was 10 of 19 for 148 yds. with a TD and an interception. With Oklahoma up next, Wildcat HC Chris Klieman will have to improvise even if Howard (who has connected on just 49% of his passes) is available.
Liberty WR DJ Stubbs (6 recs. 102 yds. in 1st 2Gs) missed the Old Dominion game with a foot injury and remained sidelined against Syracuse. The Flames have been a little short at receiver with several expected contributors and backups missing varying amount of time with a variety of injuries.
Louisiana Tech QB Austin Kendal sat out the North Texas game with and undisclosed medical issue and was replaced by Aaron Allen, who clicked on 14 of 18 throws but as sacked 3 times and didn’t throw a TD or interception.
Louisville LB Monty Montgomery, one of the Cards’ most experienced defenders and the 2nd-leading returning tackler from last season, will be lost for the season due to an ACL injury suffered against UCF.
LSU AA CB Derek Stingley injured his foot during the week and sat out against Mississippi State. Although RB John Emery (academics) remains out due to academic problems, co-starter Tyrion Davis-Price, who missed some work with a minor problem, was ready to go at Mississippi State and carried 13 times for 51 yards but it was QB Max Johnson who was the hero, tossing 4 TD passes in the 28-25 road win against the Bulldogs.
Miami Florida QB D’Eriq King has a shoulder injury, was held out of the 69-0 victory over Central Connecticut Saturday and is iffy for Thursday’s game against Virginia. King was replaced by Tyler Van Dyke and Jake Garcia, who combined for 21-25 passing 417 YP and 5 TDs against the Blue Devils. Check status for King vs. Virginia.
Middle Tenn St Although jr. RB Chaton Mobley (the team’s leading rusher returning from LY) missed the UTSA and Charlotte games for undisclosed reasons, but the Blue Raider attack received a boost from jr. Chase Cunningham, who took over for NC State transfer Bailey Hockman as starter Friday after being ineffective the past 2 games. Cunningham finished with 379 passing yards on 28 of 40 attempts with 5 TDs and no interceptions to keep the Blue Raiders in the game.
New Mexico State QB Jonah Johnson, returned to action after missing time with a wrist injury and completed 28 of 47 passes for 280 yds. with a TD and an int. in 41-21 loss to Hawai’i.
Notre Dame QB Jack Coan injured his leg and limped off against Wisconsin. He was replaced by soph Drew Pine, who completed 6 of 8 passes for 81 yds. with a TD and no interceptions in and helped turn around the game against the Badgers, who led 13-10 in the 4th Q in eventual 41-13 Irish victory, but were burned by a pair of pick-sixes in the crucial final period.
Ohio State Frosh QB CJ Stroud was held out of the Akron game with a shoulder problem but should be back against Rutgers as he was on the reserve list for the game against the Zips. Backup QB Kyle McCord impressed by completing 13 of 17 passes for 319 yds., 2 TDs and an int. in relief in the 59-7 romp against Akron. Sr. LB K’Vaughan Pope walked off and apparently quit the team during the second quarter after a public squabble over playing time. The Buckeyes later made it official and dismissed him.
Purdue Star WR David Bell has been upgraded to questionable against Minnesota this week after missing time with a concussion.
San Diego State QB Jordon Brookshire (foot), who continued to sit for the 2nd straight week against Towson, is a possibility to return soon. The Aztecs didn’t need Brookshire in the 48-21 win over Towson, as backup Lucas Johnson completed 16 of 25 throws with a TD and an interception.
San Jose State QB Nick Starkel injured his arm at Western Michigan and is iffy for New Mexico State this week. Natano Woods and Walker Eget were of little help in the 23-3 loss to the Broncos, completing just a combined 3 of 12 throws for 4 yards with no ints. and no TDs.
South Carolina WR Xavier Legette, a backup on the depth chart this season after making 6 starts LY and 3 as a true frosh in 2019, who has missed time this season due to a trafic accident, could return as early as this Saturday against Troy.
South Florida QB Timmy McClain evidently isn’t completely healthy, as HC Jeff Scott revealed he’s been affected by a hamstring injury. McClain had been inserted as the starter after Cade Fortin struggled, and he played fairly well against Florida A&M (163 YP, 1 TD, 0 int. and 51 rush yards). McClain managed to go the distance in the 35-27 loss at BU, however, completing 17 of 24 passes for 186 and rushing 15 times for 55 yards (no TDs, no ints.).
Syracuse Dino Babers went in a different direction against Liberty on Friday, benching jr. Tommy DeVito in favor of 6-4, 230-lb. soph Mississippi State transfer Garrett Schrader at QB. Schrader was only 6 of 15 throwing for 77 yds. (0-0 ratio), but he ran 16 times for 53 yards and (most importantly) 2 rushing TDs. WR Taj Harris, who had 8 catches for 122 yds. in Week 2 vs. Rutgers, was held out against Albany but returned to action against Liberty and caught a pass for no gain.
Temple First choice QB and Georgia transfer D’Wan Mathis returned to action against Wagner after sitting out Akron and BC games. He performed well, clicking on 22 of 32 passes for 292 YP and a pair of TDs with no interceptions.
Texas Tech Red Raiders lost QB Tyler Shough (63 of 91 passing, 863 YP, 6-3 ratio) with a broken collarbone suffered in loss to Texas. Backup Henry Colombi replaced him vs. the Longhorns and acquitted himself well, completing 17 of 23 passes for 324 yards with 3 TDs and an interception.
UAB Vet QB Tyler Johnston III was removed against North Texas on Sept. 18 due to an injury to his non-throwing shoulder and didn’t play last Saturday in 28-21 victory at Tulane. It was jr. Dylan Hopkins who took over, connecting on 19 of 27 passes for 240 yards with a 3-1 TD-int. ratio.
UCLA QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson overcame a shoulder injury against Stanford and made crucial plays to secure the 35-24 victory over the Cardinal. Check status going forward.
UNLV Frosh QB Doug Brumfield (6 starts LY, 2 this season before being KO’d against Arizona State and missing Iowa State) returned to action and helped put a scare into Fresno State by tossing a pair of TD passes in the first half, but left with just over 3 mins. left before the break with the Rebels holding a 14-3 lead. He returned in the 2nd half but his knee injury didn’t allow him to play very long and finished with a 6 of 13, 143 YP, 2 TD night.
USC Good news/bad news for the Trojans as QB Kedon Slovis returned to action after being KO’d early by Washington State, returned to action Oregon State but it didn’t help the bottom line for SC. Slovis was 31 of 49 passing for 355 yds., bot threw only 1 TD vs. 3 interceptions. However, SC lost the services of backup Jaxson Dart for an indefinite period, as it was revealed he tore his meniscus. Dart threw for 391 yards and 4 TDs (and 2 ints.) against the Cougars and was instrumental in rallying Troy from an early 14-0 deficit. Backup WR Kyle Ford (4 catches for 71 yards and a TD is iffy with a knee problem.
Utah Tragedy befell the Utah program as backup DB Aaron Lowe was shot and killed in Salt Lake City after midnight following the Utes’ victory over Washington State. Baylor transfer sr. QB Charlie Brewer abruptly left the team with intent to transfer after the San Diego State game. Brewer, who had started the first 3 games and completed 61% of his passes for 484 yds. with 3 TDs and 3 ints., had been pulled in favor of soph Cameron Rising, who completed 19 of 32 passes for 153 yds. with 3 TDs and 0 interceptions. Rising was listed as the starter Tuesday and Brewer announced his transfer immediately, allowing him to use his redshirt and play next season.
Virginia Top RB Wayne Taulapapa (17 carries for 81 yds.) didn’t play against Wake Forest due to a concussion. “Slash” back Keytaon Thompson, a 6-4, 215 jr. who played last year as a WR, has carried 11 times this season for 78 yds. on jet-sweep type plays, and soph Mike Hollins played with a cast on his hand against Wake Forest and carried 6 times for 36 yards and caught 2 passes for 20 more.
Washington State QB Jayden De Laura, who injured his knee and was removed from the USC game and was replaced against Utah by Tennessee transfer Jarrett Guarantano, who had started the opener against Utah State. Guarantano completed 25 of 36 passes for 248 yds. with a TD and 3 interceptions. Unknown if it will be De Laura or Guarantano this week at Cal. Starting CB Jaylen Watson (HM all-Pac 12 LY; upper body injury) started against Utah, but backup nickel Armauni Archie (not to be confused with starting nickel Armani Marsh) was unable to participate against the Utes. In a disturbing note, deep reserve WR Brandon Gray suffered a gunshot would at a party early Saturday morning and is in stable condition. The jr. hasn’t appeared in a game yet this season.
