Notes:

  • Kansas is the only Big 12 team to have won a national championship since 1994. They have made 14 appearances in the Final Four.
  • Kansas has had 5 first-place regular season finishes in the past six years. They have only won the Big 12 tournament twice in that period.
  • TCU has never made it into the Final Four.

Big 12 Conference History:

The Big 12 was formed in 1996 and its teams have participated in the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament since 1997. The tournament is a single-elimination tournament lasting four rounds. Of the ten teams in the conference, the top six earn a first-round bye leaving the bottom four to play for the last two seeds. The tournament winner earns a berth in the annual NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball tournament.

Kansas has been the conference’s dominant force with 11 Big 12 tournament wins in 14 appearances. Iowa State is 5-0 in their five championship games including their upset win over Kansas in 2019. Oklahoma has won three of its five championship games while Missouri has won two of their four. Conversely, Texas has failed to win in any of its six championship game appearances.

Since 2006, only Kansas (8), Iowa State (4), and Missouri (2) have won the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Tournament. Kansas is understandably getting a lot of respect from bookmakers entering the 2020-21 season. However, they seem to like Baylor a little more. A Big 12 team hasn’t gone on to win the NCAA tournament since Kansas did it in 2008.

Notes:

  • Villanova (3), Marquette (1), and Georgetown (1) are the only modern Big East teams to win a national title.
  • Creighton and Xavier have never made it into the Final Four.
  • Villanova has appeared in the last five straight Big East title games winning four of them.

Big East Conference History:

The first Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament took place in 1980. Since then, the conference has gone through many changes with the most notable one coming a few years ago when it was split into the “new” Big East and the AAC. As it stands, the Big East has 10 teams in it who play a regular-season schedule before competing in the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament.

As with the other conference tournaments, the winner of the Big East tournament wins their spot in the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball tournament.  Georgetown and UConn pace the Big East with seven championships each while Villanova has five.

The Wildcats are the clear favorites to win the 2021 Big East tournament. If that happens, Villanova has a shot at winning its third NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in five years. They beat North Carolina in 2016’s championship game and then knocked off Michigan in 2018. Villanova has won the Big East tournament in four of the past five years. The odds would suggest that bookmakers have a great amount of respect for Villanova in 2021.

Big 10 Conference History:

The Big Ten comprises 14 teams and it became one of the last NCAA Division 1 conferences to establish an annual tournament. After playing out their regular season schedules, Big 10 teams compete in the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament.

The tournament seedings are based on each team’s regular-season record. The winner earns a spot in the NCAA Division 1 tournament. While the conference hasn’t produced an NCAA tournament winner since Maryland in 2002, Wisconsin made it to the big game in 2015 where they lost to Duke.

Iowa is favored ahead of Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan State to win the Big Ten tournament in 2021. All four teams are also among the top-12 favorites to both make it to the Final Four and win the NCAA tournament.

ACC Conference History:

The Atlantic Coast Conference, or ACC, was established in 1953 and is one of the top conferences in NCAA Division 1 basketball. Perhaps Duke and North Carolina are the two most well-known teams in the conference. The Tar Heels have won the regular season championship a whopping 32 times while adding 18 ACC Tournament Championships and six NCAA Championships.

Those six NCAA Championships gives North Carolina the third-most NCAA championships behind Kentucky’s eight and UCLA’s 11. The Blue Devils have won the regular season race 19 times while claiming 21 ACC tournament championships. Duke has a total of five NCAA Championship titles which ties them with Indiana for the fourth-most NCAA tournament titles.

Virginia, Duke, and Florida State are the forerunners in the conference in 2021 and bookmakers have all three teams listed in their top-10 NCAA tournament favorites. ACC teams have combined for the most NCAA tournament championships with 17. The conference has won three of the past five NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournaments including Virginia in 2019. North Carolina took the honors in 2017 while Duke did it in 2015.

Notes:

  • Cincinnati the AAC tournament in 2018 and 2019 and was the runner up in 2017.

AAC Conference History:

The American Athletic Conference, also known simply as the AAC, consists of 12 teams and was created in 2013 after the splitting of the original Big East Conference. Every year, the conference’s men’s basketball teams play out their 20-game regular-season schedule before competing in the AAC Men’s Basketball tournament. Seedings for this single-elimination tournament are determined by the regular season standings. The winner of the AAC tournament earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division 1 Men’s Basketball tournament.

Being a relatively new conference, the AAC isn’t exactly steeped in history although many of the schools are. The Cincinnati Bearcats have won the past two AAC men’s basketball tournaments. They defeated the Houston Cougars in the finals in 2018 and 2019. SMU won it in 2015 and 2017 while Louisville and Connecticut have also won titles. Coincidentally, UConn and Louisville no longer sponsor men’s basketball teams in the American. After playing the role of bridesmaid for two straight years, Houston is the favorite to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.
