Hess set for first start of season
David Hess (0-0, 0.00 ERA) makes his first start of the season after getting a two-inning relief stint in the season opener for Baltimore (1-1) on Thursday. The right-hander threw 42 pitches over the scoreless frames, yielding one hit and two walks.
The 25-year-old pitched well against the Blue Jays as a rookie last year, splitting two decisions in his three starts while posting a 0.95 ERA and conceding just two runs in 19 innings.
Hess picked up the win in his most recent matchup with Toronto, scattering four hits and two walks in six innings of a 7-0 victory Aug. 27. He lasted at least six innings in all three starts and held the Blue Jays to a .179 batting average.
Randal Grichuk was one of the few Blue Jays to have success versus Hess with three doubles in eight at-bats. Justin Smoak is at the other end of the spectrum, striking out six times while going 0 for 9.
Reid-Foley gets call for No. 5 spot with Richard hurt
Sean Reid-Foley (2-4, 5.13 ERA) will serve as Toronto’s No. 5 starter for at least the next two weeks since Clayton Richard has been sidelined with a stress reaction in his knee. Richard will be put on the disabled list Monday to clear a spot for the 23-year-old, who was a late call-up last year.
The right-hander showed plenty of power in his seven starts, striking out 42 in 33 1-3 innings, but also struggled with his control in walking 21. Reid-Foley did not have a great spring, giving up eight runs and 10 hits in five innings over four appearances.
He did not face the Orioles last year but did make three of his starts against AL East rivals. Reid-Foley went 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in those games, giving up 12 runs and 15 hits in 13 1-3 innings. The righty went 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in three home starts, failing to reach the fifth inning in all of them.
The Blue Jays (2-2) settled for a split of their season-opening four-game series with a 4-3, 11-inning loss to Detroit on Sunday. Rowdy Tellez hit a pinch-hit three-run homer in the eighth after Trent Thornton had kept them in the game with five shutout innings.
Toronto’s starters threw 24 shutout innings in the series, scattering nine hits and nine walks while recording 18 strikeouts and holding Detroit to a .115 batting average.
