The Eastern Conference semifinals continue as a pair of Atlantic Division rivals take the hardwood in the City of Brotherly Love. The second-seeded Boston Celtics are on the road as they play Game 4 of their best of seven series against the third-seeded Philadelphia 76ers Monday night. Surprisingly, Boston took the first three games of the series, winning handily, 117-101, in Game 1 and following that up with a spirited comeback in a 108-103 Game 2 win Thursday night. Boston took advantage of miscues and missed opportunities to win Game 3 101-98 in overtime on the road Saturday.

The Celtics lead the all-time regular season series 258-186 and took three of four meetings this season. Philadelphia won the final meeting, 89-80, on the road on January 18. Boston has won 12 of the 20 playoff series and holds a 57-46 edge in playoff victories between the teams, that includes a seven-game victory in the last matchup in the 2012 Eastern Conference semifinals. Can Philadelphia stave off elimination?

Boston Celtics Looking for a Sweep

Boston took the first two games of the series at home, which to some extent, was likely expected as they won all four home games against the Bucks in the opening round. The Celtics went on the road and, despite a pro-76ers crowd at the Wells Fargo Center, managed to make the critical plays late in the game to earn the victory. With Boston now holding a commanding 3-0 advantage, can Brad Stevens get his team to close things out in Game 4 or will this series end up back in the TD Garden for a Game 5 Wednesday night?

The Celtics have had their offensive struggles in the postseason, shooting 44.8 percent from the field and 36.2 percent from beyond the arc: they average 11.3 three pointers per game. Boston’s edge comes at the charity stripe as they sink 76.7 percent of their chances. In Game 3, the Celtics shot 45.1 percent from the floor and knocked down 10 of 38 three point attempts in the contest. Boston converted nine of 44 free throws and committed 13 turnovers. Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 24 points in the win, while Terry Rozier finished with 18 points. Forward Jaylen Brown chipped in with 16 points plus nine boards while Al Horford added 13 points, six rebounds and three blocks, including the game-winning bucket with 5.5 seconds to play in overtime. Marcus Morris struggled to shoot the ball as he hit three of 14, including one of seven from three point range, en route to nine points.

Philadelphia 76ers Hope to Extend Series

Philadelphia, for the second straight game, let one slip away and now finds itself in the unenviable position of being down 3-0 in the series. The 76ers now can’t look ahead to winning the series: instead, they have to look at each game as a one game season. A loss will send Philadelphia home for the offseason and send Boston to the Eastern Conference Finals. The 76ers have no one to blame but themselves for the missed opportunities, especially against the banged up and depleted Boston rotation. Can Brett Brown get his team to deliver a victory in Game 4?

The 76ers are having their ups and downs shooting the ball in the postseason: they hit 43.6 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from beyond the arc while connecting on 10.5 triples per contest. Philadelphia’s edge has come at the line as they hit 75.7 percent of their chances at the stripe. In Game 3, the 76ers shot 39.2 percent from the field and went nine of 30 from three point range. Philadelphia converted 13 of 18 free throw attempts and turned the ball over 15 times. The 76ers did own a 16-5 edge in fast break points but blew chances to seal the win. Joel Embiid led Philadelphia with 22 points and 19 rebounds in the loss. JJ Redick had 18 points, Ben Simmons chipped in 16 points, eight rebounds plus eight assists and Ersan Ilyasova added 14 off the bench. Marco Belinelli added 12, including the jumper that tied the game and forced overtime, while Dario Saric put up 11. Robert Covington sputtered, going zero for eight from the field, while finishing with one point. Simmons blew a dunk and he missed a pair of layups in overtime, including one in the final 20 seconds off an offensive rebound when the 76ers could have forced Boston to foul in order to get the ball back.

Philadelphia

  • 76ers are 18-6 ATS in their last 24 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600
  • 76ers are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 home games

Philadelphia missed their chances in both Game 2 and Game 3. Now, the 76ers face the daunting task that exactly zero NBA teams have ever dug themselves out of: the dreaded 3-0 series deficit in the postseason. Boston has ground and clawed their way to this big lead thanks to playing gritty team basketball and making crucial plays at critical times. Philadelphia saw Simmons make crucial mistakes with the game hanging in the balance in Game 3. The 76ers will learn from their mistakes: they live to fight another day as they get back to playing the way they did down the stretch in the regular season.
