The New York Mets have won three straight games after taking care of the visiting Diamondbacks over the weekend. They’ll have a golden opportunity to win their fourth consecutive contest on Monday night when they take on the last-place Miami Marlins. Will they capitalize?

956 New York Mets (-130); 8.5 runs

Monday, May 21, 2018

7:10 p.m. ET, Citi Field

Public Betting Trends

Oddsmakers from online sportsbooks currently list the Mets as a -130 favorite. As of this writing, 59% of the betting tickets wagered at online sportsbooks are on the Mets to beat the Marlins on the moneyline.

Marlins’ Hernandez allows one run in five innings on Wednesday

Elieser Hernandez held the Dodgers to just one run in five innings but had to settle for a no-decision on Wednesday. The only dent in the scoreboard he allowed was a solo homer by Yasmani Grandal. Hernandez yielded just three knocks and one walk while fanning two in the solid outing. He left the ballgame with a good-sized lead but the Marlins’ bullpen soon coughed it up, although they did end up winning the ballgame in the end.

Hernandez made two relief appearances earlier in the year but this was the rookie’s first major-league league start. He now has a 2.25 ERA with three strikeouts and one walk in eight total innings on the season.

Mets skipped Vargas’ turn in the rotation following another poor outing

The Mets will skip Jason Vargas’ next turn in the rotation. Vargas has posted a hideous 13.86 ERA over three starts since returning from the disabled list, and manager Mickey Callaway said Friday that, in retrospect, it probably would’ve been wise to give the lefty another rehab start or two. He will throw a simulated game next Tuesday before rejoining the rotation later in the week.

MLB Betting Trends

Miami

The over is 5-0 in the Marlins’ last five road games versus a left-handed starter and is 7-3-1 in their last 11 games played on Monday.

New York

The over is 4-1 in Vargas’ last five starts.

Prediction: Marlins +120 over Mets

The Marlins are in the midst of a two-game skid and have dropped six of their last 10 games but I’m going to take a shot on them tonight. The Mets are winless in Vargas’ last four starts and he’s been atrocious this season. They’re also 4-7 in their last 11 home games and have dropped five of six versus the rest of the National League East.
