NFL POWER RANKINGS 2021

 ARI Cardinals

No Kyler Murray, no DeAndre Hopkons, no problem for the Cardinals, who steamrolled the rival 49ers behind a solid performance from backup QB Colt McCoy and more dominant play from their top-ranked defense.

TB Buccaneers
Tampa entered its bye week off a road loss to New Orleans averaging the second-most PPG (32.5), total YPG (423.1), and the most TDs per game (4.2) with Tom Brady averaging a league-high 327.5 passing YPG. Sean Murphy-Bunting (elbow) might be able to return in Week 10 to bolster their maligned secondary.

LAR Rams
Matthew Stafford was under fire from the opening plays of Sunday’s home loss to the Titans and his miscues in the first half were inexcusable. The Rams came into the game as the least penalized team but committed 12 penalties for 115 yards in a spectacular implosion.

BUF
 Bills

Now Buffalo has a pair of head-scratching losses to inferior competition following Sunday’s strange 9-6 defeat in Jacksonville. They can get right at the Jets next week before entering a tough stretch in their schedule.

TEN
 Titans

Mike Vrabel’s defense struggled badly in the opening weeks, but came up with clutch turnovers and held the Bills, Colts, and Rams to a combined 42.4% conversion rate on 3rd down in impressive wins, the last of which came without Derrick Henry (foot).

 GB Packers

Somewhere Sunday, Aaron Rodgers was smirking at how bad his supposed replacement looked against a poor Chiefs defense. Of course, Jordan Love can’t be blamed for the series of special teams gaffs that kept Green Bay from competing at Arrowhead.

 DAL Cowboys

Instead of bullying Denver’s mediocre run defense, the Cowboys front seven were bullied for 190 rushing yards and 407 net yards while the Broncos went 8-for-15 on 3rd down in another surprising result. Dak Prescott was shut out with a career-low 94 passing yards in the first half but he said his calf injury was not an issue.

BAL
 Ravens

Down 24-10 to start the second half, Lamar Jackson and company rattled off 21 unanswered points and went on to beat the Vikings, 34-31, in overtime. While they are a flawed team that has fallen behind against good offenses, the Ravens have to derive some momentum from their third double-digit comeback of the year.

LAC
 Chargers
Justin Herbert (32-for-38, 356 yards, 3 total TDs) bounced back from consecutive poor outings against veteran coaches by slicing and dicing the Eagles for a narrow road win. The Chargers have won two of their three games on the East Coast thus far and seem to be maturing with Herbert leading the charge.

KC
 Chiefs
When the Chiefs are depending on their defense to win games, something is seriously awry in Kansas City. That improving unit played well enough to edge the Giants and shorthanded Packers with Patrick Mahomes completing just 57.5% of his passes for an average of 5.2 yards per completion.

CLE
 Browns
With Odell Beckham Jr. released and that drama behind them, the Browns got back to basics and pounded the Bengals for 153 rushing yards at a 6.7 YPC clip, while Myles Garrett and company sacked Joe Burrow five times and forced two interceptions.

NE
 Patriots
Suddenly the Patriots are playing championship-caliber defense while outscoring teams, 105-43, over three wins. A Week 10 home game against the physical Browns will indicate whether Bill Belichick’s young squad is going to become a contender ahead of schedule.

IND
 Colts
The Colts bullied the Jets for 260 rushing yards at an 8.7 YPC clip and are averaging 157.6 rushing YPG with 9 TDs on the ground over their last five games. Their secondary has allowed at least a 66.7% completion rate in five of their last six, though, with the exception coming in a deluge at San Francisco.

MIN
 Vikings
Minnesota leads the NFL in moral victories. Their five losses have come by an average of just 3.6 PPG with three of their contests going to overtime.

CIN
 Bengals
After falling into a trap game at the Jets, the Bengals came out completely flat in a key AFC North showdown with Cleveland, averaging 5.0 yards per play and fumbling four times, losing one.

LV
 Raiders
This franchise just can’t seem to string together much momentum. The Raiders are now 3-16 after their bye week since 2003 and couldn’t find a way to beat the shorthanded Giants despite averaging 5.8 YPC with 403 net yards. Derek Carr’s trio of turnovers certainly cost them.

NO
 Saints
Trevor Siemian overcame a late start and hit Kenny Stills for a go-ahead score in the final minute but the Saints couldn’t hang on over the Falcons. Taysom Hill tallied 33 passing yards and 4 rushing yards in limited action and it will be interesting to see how Sean Payton handles the QB competition going forward.

PIT
 Steelers
The Steelers have rallied behind Mike Tomlin for three straight wins and they’ll look to take another key step forward by beating the Bears on Monday night.

SF
 49ers
Jimmy Garoppolo has taken seven sacks with three picks over his last three starts. With George Kittle back and Deebo Samuel showcasing dynamic talent, the injury-prone and relatively immobile QB is in danger of losing his gig to rookie Trey Lance.

SEA
 Seahawks
When Russell Wilson (finger) is back under center, the Seahawks will be a huge challenge to defend. They could become even tougher if the front office makes a move for Odell Beckham Jr.

DEN
 Broncos
The Broncos dominated time of possession (41:12) and owned the line of scrimmage in a 30-16 win at Dallas. Now that their star-studded secondary is healthy, Denver isn’t giving up much of anything at the back end.

PHI
 Eagles
Jalen Hurts went 7-for-8 for 112 yards in the second half while responding twice in a duel with Justin Herbert. The Eagles stayed committed to their solid ground game with 175-plus rushing yards in a second straight game, the visiting Chargers were just a little bit better.

NYG
 Giants
With injuries limiting their offense once again, the Giants defense came up huge with a strip sack of Derek Carr to seal a 23-16 win. Devontae Booker (hip) is banged up and Saquon Barkley hasn’t played since Week 5, so their bye comes at an opportune time.

ATL
 Falcons
Matt Ryan completed four passes of 30-plus yards against a Saints defense that entered their NFC South clash ranked fifth against the pass and was leading the league in opponent’s TD conversion rate (43.8%) in the red zone. And he did it all with Calvin Ridley (personal) no longer on the roster.

CAR
 Panthers
In four starts against the Patriots, Sam Darnold has a 1:9 TD:INT ratio with the lowest passer rating (41.9) of any QB against Bill Belichick. His poor play spoiled Christian McCaffrey’s return from a hamstring injury, and P.J. Walker could start to look like an appealing option for Matt Rhule’s staff.

WAS
 Football Team
Washington’s underachieving defense is no longer giving up the most PPG in the NFL, but they’re still yielding a league-high 56.5% conversion rate on 3rd down and a 60% conversion rate on 4th down.

CHI
 Bears
Justin Fields rushed for 103 yards on 10 carries and completed 19-for-27 passes for 175 yards last week in his best game yet as a pro. Now he faces a daunting challenge Monday night at Pittsburgh against an elite defense.

JAX
 Jaguars
Josh Allen stole the show with Josh Allen and the Bills in town, tallying a team-high eight tackles with two sacks and the first two turnovers of his career. It’s absolutely stunning that this team was able to hold any NFL opponent to 6 points, let alone the Bills.

MIA
 Dolphins
Facing the Texans at home, the Dolphins backed into a 17-9 win while committing five turnovers. Jacoby Brissett drew a spot start for Tua Tagovailoa (finger) and Miami’s already inefficient offense hit the tank.

NYJ
 Jets
Mike White looked sharp again before getting injured and Josh Johnson compiled 317 passing yards in relief, so the Jets offense is clearly starting to come together without rookie QB Zach Wilson (knee). Their defense, however, is coughing up a league-high 31.4 PPG.

DET
 Lions
The only winless team in the league entered their bye week giving up 30.5 PPG and 134.5 rushing YPG while facing the highest rush-play rate in the NFL. Taking the Under on their preseason win total (4.5) looks like an easy win.

HOU Texans

Tyrod Taylor (hamstring) failed to rekindle his Week 1 magic with three interceptions while taking five sacks in a lackluster outing at the Dolphins. Houston is scoring a league-low 14.9 PPG and allowing the most TDs (3.6) per game.
