Notre Dame Among Teams Backed By Sharps In Early Betting

After a flurry of early activity on the NCAAF Week 4 betting board after opening lines from Offshore sportsbook BetOnline were released Sunday afternoon, there were a few surprises and a couple of 2½-point-plus movers. Notre Dame went from an opening 5½ up to 8 before settling back around 7½ at press time for their game against Wake Forest at a soggy (Hurricane Florence) BB&T Field (FieldTurf) in Winston-Salem on Saturday (noon ET; ABC).

Stanford, which rested RB Bryce Love in Week 3 vs. U.C. Davis, moved from a 1½-point underdog to a 1-point favorite after the professionals did some early work, backing the Cardinal against QB Justin Herbert and Oregon and Autzen Stadium (FieldTurf) on Saturday (8 p.m. ET; ABC).

And TCU also saw a favorite-flip from open with early action on the Horned Frogs over host Texas, moving from an opening Longhorns -2½ a healthy 5 points the other way to #15 TCU -2½ -105 for their semi-rivalry (TEX 62-25-1) game at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium (FieldTurf) on Saturday (4:30 p.m. ET; FOX).

Some other sides the wiseguys and early bettors backed: N.C. State, which went from an opening 4 (-115) quickly to 7 for their non-conference game at Marshall on Saturday at Joan C. Edwards Stadium (FieldTurf) in Huntington, WV (7 p.m. ET; CBSS); and Florida, which went from 8-point opening chalk down to -6 (-105) at BetOnline for the Gators’ Third Saturday in September (FLA 27-20) annual SEC showdown with Tennessee at Neyland Stadium (grass) in Knoxville on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN).

Sun Belt Conference side Arkansas State also saw enough money in the first two hours of trading early to go from 4½- (-105) to 6½-point home chalks (-115) for their tussle with MWC side UNLV at Centennial Bank Stadium (ProGreen) in Jonesboro on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN3).

And early betting was seen on South Florida, with the host Bulls going from big opening 21½-point favorites to as high as 24 in some shops offshore (Heritage) for their Saturday evening affair vs. East Carolina at Raymond James Stadium (grass) in Tampa (8 p.m. ET; ESNN) in a series which has been completely dominated of late by USF (6-0 ATS L6, 3-0 ATS L3 at home). Count me in on fading the Pirates this weekend (2017: USF 61 EC 31, USF -21).

And there was heavy fading of Wisconsin — upset at home by BYU in Week 3 — with the sharps moving the opening number on RB and Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor (+650 to win Heisman Trophy, 5Dimes) and the Badgers (3-1 ATS L4 at IOWA) from opening 6- to 3-point favorites (-105, BetOnline) for their Battle for the Heartland Trophy (WIS 46–43–2) on Saturday in Week 4 at Kinnick Stadium (FieldTurf) in Iowa City (8:30 p.m. ET; FOX).
