Perhaps for good reason, Miami has become the du jour team among the pundit crowd, which is always anxious to promote the hipster Canes into national prominence, as was the case in 2017. This seems a bit different than the false alarm of three years ago, however, as Miami really does seem to have figured out its offense, with first-year o.c. Rhett Lashlee (a Gus Malzahn/Sonny Dykes disciple) finding a perfect fit for the new Cane Spread in Houston transfer QB D’Eriq King, who might be pulling some Heisman votes away from Trevor Lawrence. But we caution Miami fans to pump the brakes a bit, as previous victims the past month have all had various shortcomings. Now the Canes have to deal with Dabo Swinney, whose Clemson has lorded over the ACC in recent years the way Bayern Munich does the Bundesliga. Keep in mind that prior to last week’s 41-23 win over Virginia, the Tigers had covered seven straight in Death Valley vs. ACC foes, always laying bigger numbers (often much bigger) than the early price this week. And after three tune-ups (failing to cover sky-high prices vs. each), this foe should get Clemson’s attention.
