BOWL SEASON IS NOT LIKE THE REGULAR SEASON
Beating any sport begins with finding holes in the betting lines, but that is only the beginning of the process, especially at college bowl time, where handicapping rules have to be altered to fit what really amounts to a new season. There are many new questions concerning the ability of each team to cover the number, but there are answers to all of them – if you know what you are looking for.
After addressing the issue of betting lines, our handicapping process addresses five basic issues.
- We look at every single game in its own context, since whether it wins or loses as no impact on anything else in the football universe. For instance the Rose Bowl game between Oregon and Wisconsin stands alone, with the outcome impacting nothing but a few egos.
- The mixture and match ups of teams from different conferences require one to dig deep to find out just how strong, or weak, a team is. For instance, why is Boise State from the Mountain West Conference only a 3.5-point dog against Washington, which hails from the much stronger PAC-12 Conference.
- One also must determine whether a team is truly pleased with where it is playing.
A disappointed team that is accustomed to playing in a prestigious bowl but finds itself in the minor league of post-season play might not be focused enough to win or cover the number. For instance, how about Utah as a 7-point favorite meeting Texas in the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio?
- One must also determine the intent of each team and whether it is using the bowl game as a vacation trip and a “thank you” to the team for a job well done, or is it absolutely focused on the goal of winning. It makes a big difference in how teams play.
- What is the history of each coach in the game? The coach, and not the school’s post-season history, determines how a team will play. Coaches such as Nick Saban at Alabama (14 wins) and Skip Holtz at Louisiana Tech (7-3) treat bowl games like Super Bowls, while others are not so intense.
On the issue of a team’s intent as it approaches its bowl game, we make it a business to find out such basic things as to whether a team is using the hotel suggested by bowl officials, or has chosen a spot 40 miles away, or if a team is participating in all the pre-game festivities or is just involved in a token manner. It all means something. A team staying far away from the site of the bowl game, or which is not on the full-time bowl party circuit is a team that is sacrificing those comforts to get ready to kick somebody’s butt.
Again we make our business to know all these things, because it is from these hidden issues that winners come.
RATING THE GAMES IS WHERE WE ARE AT OUR BEST
Those of you who have been with us in the past, and especially with this current football season, know our greatest strength in handicapping is understanding just how much money one can bet on a game-and when a game offers an opportunity that rates a 10-unit, 50-unit or even a 100-unit play.
For the record, most of the 39 bowl games will carry ratings averaging between 10 units and 25 units, but we have already spotted numerous games we know that for a variety of reasons will merit a major bet. In fact, we know already you are going to receive these major moves during this bowl season:
- 200-unit Bowl Game of the Year!
- 100-unit Bowl Upset and Bowl Blowouts of the Year!
- 50-unit Bowl Totals of Year and Bowl Playoff Game of Year!

THE COLLEGE BOWLS – Why the Bowls Can’t Miss…
This is the time of year when amateur, once-a-year bettors – alumni and good old boys -“stand up” for the alma mater or the home team by betting on them. They don’t know where the line is and they don’t care. This isn’t a bet. It’s a loyalty oath. SO FOR OPENERS. BOWL MONEY ISN’T SMART MONEY. IT’S DUMB MONEY. And if it comes in too heavily on one side – call it the A team – Vegas moves the line in the other direction to balance out the action. That gives us extra points on the B team – more points than we could expect from a regular season game.
THAT’S WHY WE WIN SO BIG IN THE BOWLS…
Last Year we went 35-15 Overall!
23-8 for 74.1% on TOP RATED 40-50*.
12-7 for 63% on 10-30* Plays!
All together it was our 3rd BEST BOWL SEASON EVER!
